Should We Take Engagement Photos?

In the flurry of getting engaged (pop all the bubbly!) and beginning the process of planning your wedding, there’s so much going on at once. So, in all the excitement, you might wonder if you should even take some of your precious time for an engagement session. When I was engaged, I wondered the same thing! So, I wanted to share with you some reasons why it’s so important to take an evening to document this time of being engaged. As a photographer, I believe your engagement session is one of the most important parts of the pre-wedding process because…

It helps us get to know each other
This time spent shooting your engagement photos is relaxed with the sunset as our only time constraint (although it doesn’t have to end when we lose our light…more on that later). As we walk and take photos, It allows more time for you to get to know me and vice-versa in preparation for your wedding day.

You get comfortable in front of the camera
Most of us are not naturals in front of the camera and it takes some time and guidance to warm-up. An engagement session grows confidence in front of the camera so that on your wedding day you can easily and without much thought be comfortable and yourself – one less thing on your mind that day (yes, please)!

You have photos to share and display
The images from your engagement session are perfect for save-the-dates, your wedding website, prints to display at the rehearsal dinner or reception, and framed prints for the walls of your home! It’s also really nice to have photos together that are less formal than your wedding portraits and more reflective of your everyday life together.

This brief season is documented
I remember wanting to hurry up to the wedding while I was engaged and a friend encouraging me to enjoy each moment because I would never get this season back. Her advice was pure gold. The session is a chance to pause, take a deep breath, and soak up this time. You’ll be husband and wife for the rest of your life, but only fiancés for a short time! I also highly recommend that after your engagement session, since you’re dressed up a bit more than usual with hair and makeup done, to use the opportunity to go out together and enjoy a date free from wedding planning talk.

Engagement sessions are one of my favorite things to photograph as I get to talk with you and hear more about your story and document this season. So, if you’re ready to get your engagement session scheduled, let’s talk!
